Plus, there is everything that Balbriggan has to offer, including an expansive community centre, parks, walk trails, beaches, harbours and so much more.
Activities
In Hamilton Park, we believe that activity should be at the centre of the care we provide.
We recognise that our residents need something more than the traditional model of an activities co-ordinator who simply organises quizzes and entertainment, fun though these activities are. Activity is part of daily life. Many residents need to feel usefully and actively engaged in tasks, and welcome the chance to help out in the garden, bake, or even chat to the maintenance man about the best way to put up a shelf!
Our approach to activities all comes back to person-centred care and listening to each resident’s life story, as individual tastes and interests vary greatly. Some people’s activity requirements will be to simply listen to their favourite radio show or TV programme every day; some will want to pop out to a weekly coffee morning at the church hall they’ve been going to for years; some people will want to run the gardening club.
It’s our job to enable everyone to carry on an active life with as much independence as they are able, or want, to have. We believe that no-one should have to give up a much-loved hobby or interest when they move into a care home.
For residents experiencing a form of dementia, certain activities can stimulate and engage them and be very beneficial. Our trained team are skilled in caring for residents with dementia.
Hamilton Park has an activities therapist who is responsible for a weekly schedule of activities residents can choose to get involved in. Almost every week, there’s a party or celebration of some kind, and we often stage fund-raising events for charities such as Flora Woman’s mini marathon, MS Ireland, Guide Dog’s Ireland, Autism Ireland or the Marie Keating Foundation. Hamilton Park has strong links with their local communities, and you’ll often see a local school choir popping in to sing for residents.

Pet therapy: Man’s best friend as healer
Animal-assisted therapy can help healing and lessen depression and fatigue.
By Hamilton Park.
Is medicine going to the dogs? Yes, but in a good way. Pet therapy is gaining fans in health care and beyond. Find out what’s behind this growing trend.
What is pet therapy?
Pet therapy is a broad term that includes animal-assisted therapy and other animal-assisted activities. Animal-assisted therapy is a growing field that uses dogs or other animals to help people recover from or better cope with health problems, such as heart disease, cancer and mental health disorders.
Animal-assisted activities, on the other hand, have a more general purpose, such as providing comfort and enjoyment for nursing home residents.
How does animal-assisted therapy work?
Your carer mentions the Hamilton Park’s animal-assisted therapy program and asks if you’d be interested. You say yes, and your carer arranges for someone to tell you more about the program. Soon after that, an assistance dog and its handler visit your room. They stay for 10 or 15 minutes. You’re invited to pet the dog and ask the handler questions.
After the visit, you realize you’re smiling. And you feel a little less tired and a bit more optimistic. You can’t wait to tell your family all about that charming canine. In fact, you’re already looking forward to the dog’s next visit.
What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is a health care profession that combines psychology and the art of music to improve the quality of life of a person of any age and level of ability. Music therapists use music based methods to address a person’s physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual needs.
Music Therapy differs from academic and skills oriented training, as it focuses primarily on the client’s emotional expression, behaviour, personal experiences and overall well-being.
As everybody responds to music, no prior musical skills are needed for the client to benefit from this intervention.
Benefits
A large body of international research and clinical work on the field has demonstrated the numerous positive outcomes of Music Therapy for people of all ages and levels of ability.
Everybody can benefit from this therapeutic intervention, and particularly people who need additional support. These include people with learning difficulties or special needs and adolescents with behavioural difficulties, as well as people with physical or mental health challenges, substance abuse problems, brain injuries and elderly with Dementia.
Common goals of a Music Therapy treatment plan include:
  • To provide psychological support for people with emotional trauma, physical or mental illness
  • To enhance family relations
  • To promote greater self-awareness
  • To assist in managing behaviour that challenges
  • To provide opportunities for cognitive stimulation for people with intellectual disability
  • To help in stress management
  • To enhance the rehabilitation process for people with traumatic or acquired brain injury
  • To provide comfort to people who receive end-of-life care.
How does it work?
Each Music Therapy programme is carefully designed, planned and evaluated on an ongoing basis alongside with the carer or team. Our person centred care plans ultimately aim to help clients function as independently as possible in their daily lives. Sessions can take place on a one-to-one basis or in group settings.
By using a variety of techniques (e.g. singing, instrument playing, movement to music, song-writing, song reminiscence, lyric analysis), the therapist works towards the goals that are specifically created for the individual or group, upon assessment of the clients’ strengths, needs and personal preferences.
For example, the therapist may help a bereaving person write their own song, enhancing their emotional expression and helping them through the grieving process. Or the therapist may use a variety of familiar songs in a systematic way to enhance vocalisations for a person who is non-verbal.
What Happens at a Session?
Each session (group or individual) is tailored to meet the identified needs and goals of the client. Just as no two people are the same, different techniques will elicit different outcomes in clients. Hence our delivery of a range of techniques are carefully tailored to meet each participant’s needs and abilities, as well as addressing their specific goals for intervention.
A variety of techniques may be applied at a session, including the following:
Clinical Improvisation: Provides a platform for expression without the constraints and limitations of structured music or language.
Music based games: Used to increase attention span, promote application to task (demonstrating how to complete a task, step by step), eye contact and turn taking.
Instrument playing: To enhance motor skills and reduce agitation.
Listening to music: Fosters relaxation and provides a means of emotional expression by enabling the client to relate to what is being expressed in the music.
Song Writing and Composition: Helps clients express their feelings and communicate through the development of their own songs, giving them the freedom to express their inner thoughts and emotions. The written word gives the therapist a window to the client’s mind/world and opens up a route on which to build a therapeutic relationship to further explore their feelings.
Singing Familiar Songs: Enhances speech and language skills, motivates, promotes a sense of belonging and connectedness and decreases levels of agitation.
Lyric Analysis: Provides a platform to discuss and relate some of the person’s experience to what is being expressed in the songs.
Relaxation to Music: Assists in emotional regulation and stress reduction.
Movement to Music: Helps to reduce stress/tension and promotes self-regulation.
Despite of confusion, disorientation, deterioration of speech and memory loss, people with dementia often continue to sing their favourite songs and dance to past tunes, when given the opportunity!!
Research has shown that, even in late stages of dementia, the person can continue to respond to music, even when they are unresponsive to most other stimuli.
Music – A Powerful Intervention
Music has the capacity to encourage, energise and empower the release of a person’s true inner self. The planned use of music is being applied by music therapist worldwide to successfully address an elder person’s physical, mental, emotional, cognitive and social needs.
A strong body of international research supports the use of Music Therapy to help maintain or improve physical, mental, cognitive and psychological functions in the elderly.
By providing sensory stimulation and the opportunity to create, perform and move to music, a Music Therapy programme is a truly effective way of assisting the elderly in maintaining and improving their physical and psychological functions. The sense of joy and well-being that music induces has a calming effect on mind and body and is a powerful unifier when used in group interventions. It encourages conversation, sharing of reminiscences and, whilst not a pre-requisite to engage in Music Therapy, it may unleash a hidden or forgotten musical talent.
Individualised programmes
Our therapists have a vague experience working in the field of elder care, through partnerships with Hamilton Park.
Sessions are guided by the needs of our clients, as determined at the assessment phase and can be conducted on a one-to-one or group basis. Sessions can be delivered with or without instruments, with accompaniment (either live or pre-recorded) or acappella.
When working with groups, participants are placed in an environment that suits their personality and mental state. Some settle better in an open group, where they are free to come and go as they wish; others need to be placed in a closed group, where the make-up of the group is carefully composed to avoid placing additional conflict or unease on the patent.
Benefits
Music Therapy’s positive outcomes in elderly care have been proven through years of research and clinical work on the field. We have carefully designed a range of Elderly Care Music Therapy programmes that focus on addressing the needs of the elderly in three main areas:
  • Physical state
  • Improves mobility, strength and muscle control
  • Helps pain management
  • Promotes relaxation and stress management; elicits positive physical reactions that reduce the risks of cardio-cerebral problems and high blood pressure
  • Enhances the motivation for and engagement in physical rehabilitation exercises when these are combined with the use of music
Cognition & Communication
Promotes sensory and intellectual stimulation
Helps with reality orientation (time, place, person recognition) and information recall
Improves attention/concentration and stimulates long and short-term memory
Stimulates the mind through reminiscence and creative self-expression which helps to improve quality of life
Provides an alternative means of communication when
Promotes a response, even in late-stage Dementia, when response to most other stimuli is impaired
Emotional state
Provides the enjoyment of participation and promotes engagement, social interaction and a sense of belonging
Provides an important way to cope with the stress of ageing, death or physical/ psychological failures, as it eliminates anxiety, depression and feelings of isolation
Enhances self-esteem by providing opportunities for choice and control
Facilitates expression of feelings and emotions
Provides comfort and psychological support to clients and their families
Improves mood, motivation, and overall well-being
Decreases levels of stress and agitation and promotes positive behaviours
Improves relaxation, sleep patterns and nutritional intake

Nutritional Services & Dining
At Hamilton Park we take great pride in our nutritional services and want our residents to dine with dignity and independence, along with a wide variety of menu options.
We offer a different menu every week incorporating seasonal items such as fresh fruits and vegetables in summer months, and soups and stews in winter months. In addition to the standard two choices at mealtime, in most facilities we have “always available” menus and grill menus. We also pay special attention to holiday meals and special occasions.
Ensuring that our clients receive proper nutrition each day in the absence of their family caregivers is an important factor in fulfilling our commitment to helping them maintain the best possible quality of life and well-being.
When your loved one comes to Hamilton Park, you can be assured their nutrition is top priority. We provide appetizing, wholesome meals and snacks; they include provisions for diabetics, vegetarians, sodium-restricted or low-cholesterol diets and all other special dietary needs.
At Hamilton Park, nutritious, appetizing meals are served in a dining room setting that is both comfortable and attractive. Menus are planned by a registered dietician who specializes in meeting the needs of every individual. Bedside service is available for those residents who are unable to attend meals in our dining room.
RESIDENTIAL CARE
As one of the Irelands leading care facilities, we are dedicated to enabling residents to enjoy life to the full in the happy, comfortable and secure surroundings of our residential homes.
Our priority is to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for residents and their relatives, safe in the knowledge that there is someone there for them 24 hours a day.
We respect the dignity of each individual. We want to make every resident in our homes feel special: treated with respect and given outstanding person-centred care.
Hamilton Park is warm and welcoming, with our own unique personality. We have won prestigious awards. Our State-of-the-art facility includes our own, hairdressing salon, complementary therapy & treatment rooms and even a dedicated cinema room, and a lot more to come over the next year, including a church and a Sensory Garden.
NURSING CARE
Nursing care in Hamilton park care facility is a natural extension of our person-centred care. If a resident has nursing needs, they’re allocated a named nurse, who is their contact for all their nursing requirements. This ensures continuity of care by people who know the resident well.
Our nurses are at the core of the care and attention we give to our residents – not just in a medical capacity, but also to give peace of mind and reassurance. They’re on hand 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Our nurses work using detailed, thorough care plans, in addition to the life stories, to ensure that every resident is properly cared for.
We’re extremely proud of our nursing team. When we recruit, we’re committed to selecting people who care as much as we do. We understand that choosing a nursing home / Care facility can be a difficult decision and that’s why we invite you to speak personally to the manager to find out more about Hamilton Park.
DEMENTIA CARE
We understand how difficult it can be to make the decision to move into full-time care – a decision that can be harder for both resident and family when the person is living with dementia. Our commitment is to support every resident in leading an active, fulfilled and happy life.
Our dementia care offer a safe, secure environment. Our teams are highly trained and deliver a high standard of dementia care, building a relationship to meet the individual needs of each person. Our dementia care team is therefore able to understand the whole person – their needs, requirements and feelings – and provide genuine care accordingly. We encourage residents to maintain familiar routines and activities so that life has meaning.
Our relationship-centred care approach is key to our care of those experiencing a form of dementia. If a resident can’t articulate their wishes, likes and dislikes, getting to know their background, with the help of their family, is essential in tailoring care to their needs. We understand that individuals are unique. We are each shaped by a lifetime of individual experiences in careers, family, hobbies and relationships.
We believe it is a privilege to take care of your loved ones and we are honoured when you choose us to provide this specialist care.
RELATIONSHIP CENTRED CARE
In Hamilton Park, we provide relationship-centred care. Relationship-centred care is another step on from person-centred care. It’s about really getting to know the resident and their history: their likes, dislikes, what makes them happy or sad, what their physical needs and preferences are. We want to know what they did before they came to live with us just as much as we want to know how they’d like to live now. It’s only with that understanding that we can ensure every resident is able to live a fulfilled, meaningful and happy life.
How do we do it? First, each resident is allocated a keyworker who will be their main contact for everyday care delivery. If the resident has a nursing need they’ll also be allocated a named nurse, who will be their contact for all their nursing requirements. This ensures continuity of care by people who know the resident well.
Each keyworker helps the resident to complete “My Life Plan” which details their life prior to coming to live with us and states how they wish to live their life. So if it’s important to someone to listen to RTE 1 every morning; or carry on a love of gardening, baking or music; or continue to go to a weekly coffee morning; or help with domestic tasks; it’s all recorded there. Wherever possible, we want residents to carry on with the day-to-day activities they’ve enjoyed all their lives.
We believe our relationship-centred care approach builds stronger relationships between residents, staff, relatives, friends and visitors to the home.
