Bishopscourt Residential Care Waterfall

Ápolási otthon (Írország)Hozzáadás a kedvencekhez

BishopsCourt is full of glass and light; it is bright on the dullest of days.
This is no accident - BishopsCourt was built with people in mind. In fact, it was custom built so that everyone staying here, or even just visiting, can get around smoothly and easily. It is specifically designed with the best of nursing home care as its first priority.
But what you experience when you visit or choose to stay here is a home with a warm, welcoming personality. That personality reflects those of BishopsCourt’s two founders Catherine O’Connor and Patsy O’Sullivan. It reflects the commitment and hard work of everyone who works here. It reflects how much and how well our residents are entertained and cared for.
Along with the light, there is colour. Our walls are almost cluttered with notice boards covered in paintings and drawings from relatives and residents alike. Everywhere you look lively primary colours jostle with more subtle warm shades for attention.
At BishopsCourt, our philosophy is that our members should still be active members of their community. Our extensive activities programme enhances the lives of our residents by allowing them to continue to have an active social life. Social activities help new residents to adjust to life in the nursing home by helping to build new friendships, giving residents a chance to socialize and making them feel “at home” in their new environment.
Many residents enjoy taking part in different hobbies and activities, and visitors as well as staff are encouraged to join in the fun. This creates a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere within the nursing home, an important part of maintaining the health and well-being of our residents and providing that extra bit of sparkle to life. A broad range of activities is directed by our activities coordinator who works with residents to develop a programme that meets the needs of all residents. Activities offered at BishopsCourt include the following:
At Bishopscourt we provide a Physiotherapy service as part of the Social Programme to enhance the lives and quality of care for our residents.
We recognise the importance of providing a comprehensive assessment to identify unique requirements, with the purpose of attaining the highest potential for optimal function and quality of life whilst minimising pain and dysfunction. With this in mind every six weeks a group of eight residents will be assessed by our physiotherapist (a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP)) who will implement a tailor made exercise progamme to meet the needs of each individual resident twice weekly. The following list includes some of the routine duties we provide but is not an exhaustive scope of duties:
Initial Assessment and Treatment plans.
Falls risk assessments and prevention.
Balance and gait re-education.
Exercise Therapy to promote independence and engagement in Activities of Daily Living.
Assist in regaining functional mobility.
In January 2012 we introduced harp therapist, Orla Busteed, into our Social Programme.
Harp music has been associated with health and well-being since biblical times. The beauty of the harp’s unique sound makes it a natural choice of instrument for music therapy. Often the goal of harp therapy is relaxation and stress relief but harp music is often used as a vehicle for communication between the therapist and the resident and is very effective with people who suffer from Dementia / Alzheimers.
Orla provides both group and individual harp therapy sessions weekly at Bishopscourt. The group sessions involve recitals in the Dayroom when Orla plays ‘old favourites’ as requested by the residents. Orla also plays for individual residents in their rooms, usually at their own request, where she customises the music to suit the mood and disposition of the resident. For example, calming music may settle someone who is suffering from anxiety while more upbeat rhythmic melodies may be more suitable for a resident in need of energising. Familiar music can be reassuring but conversely, improvised freer melodies can give the space for deeper contemplation. Residents with Alzheimers react to familiar melodies and rhythms and even those with no speech have been known to sing along! Individual harp therapy sessions last approximately 20 minutes and are fully documented.
As a result of the enthusiasm for harp music shown by the residents, Orla introduced four lap harps (small harps which rest on the knees) to Bishopscourt for the use of the residents. Over the course of a few weeks, Orla gave all interested residents the opportunity to play the harp and to learn the basic rudiments of harp-playing. Four residents who had particular ability were selected for weekly harp lessons in March 2013 and thus the ‘Bishopscourt Harp Ensemble’ was formed. The group had their first recital at the Alzheimers Tea Party at Bishopscourt in May 2013. All money raised went to the Alzheimers Society. The members of the group were all awarded Certificates of Achievement for their harp-playing by Nursing Homes Ireland in August 2013. Another recital is planned before Christmas 2013.
The residents of Bishopscourt love music and, as a result, we have many live music events and sing-songs at Bishopscourt, at least five times a week.
The type of music is determined by the likes and dislikes of the residents.
We have a number of activities that help residents to get to know one another and create a community atmosphere here.
We have afternoon tea every two weeks and this gives new residents a chance to meet everyone.
We have a drinks trolley every week and parties to celebrate special birthdays (we celebrated the 101st birthday of one of our residents last May) and special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Easter etc.
Bishopscourt Residential Care in Cork introduced on a trial basis in April 2012 a percussion workshop to see if their residents would enjoy playing percussion as an activity, following a call from Peter Hill from Peter was delighted to be able to trial the percussion workshop and from what was a one off trial session has now turned into a fortnightly one and a half hour workshop.
The workshop was constructed as a joyous, fully interactive percussion workshop that is enjoyable and accessible to all, and to incorporate instruments and rhythms from different parts of the globe. The session is not solely about creating and joining in on world rhythms and song but also the workshops involve a small amount of arm movement and lifting, and also counting out the rhythms’.
A typical session would involve about 12 residents at Bishopscourt starting with small finger and hand warm up, and then a number of African and Latin based rhythms and songs would be sung and accompanied by tambourines, shakers, bells, and claves.
Mealtimes at BishopsCourt are an important time for our residents both for our priority of providing a healthy balanced diet and for social interaction with fellow residents and the care team.
We always ensure that we provide a varied and interesting menu with an emphasis on quality local produce and individual care and dietary requirements.
We are able to cater for all types of specialist diets and staff are always on hand to discuss individual resident requirements.
